All Students are Eligible for Free Meals

  • Greetings MPESD Faculty & Staff,

With the start of the 2024-25 School Year, Child Nutrition (Food Services) is focusing on a renewed adherence to the National School Lunch Program Meal Patterns for Breakfast, Lunch, Snack and Supper. These guidelines have been established by the USDA to help ensure that students receive nutritious meals. They are based on the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and are designed to support a variety of foods, including whole grains, lean meats, fruits and  vegetables, while limiting added sugar and saturated fat.

Service Lines in Cafeterias across the District have been set up to ensure that each student is actively taking a complete meal. This requires the assistance of the faculty and staff that work to get students through these service lines in an effective manner. Each Student will need to take three of the components offered at each Meal Period (one of which being a Fruit or Vegetable). More detailed information can be found at https://www.myplate.gov

As a reminder, the Child Nutrition Department (Food Services) is not permitted to handle outside food brought in by students and/or faculty. This includes holding items in School Kitchen Coolers and Freezers as well as reheating outside foods using Kitchen Equipment. This is a food safety measure put in place to ensure that all items handled and served fall in line with USDA requirements. This practice also limits the possible liability that could fall on the Department should any issues arise (such as food borne illness or allergic reaction).

It is advised that this practice also be carried out by School Faculty and Staff across campuses within the District.

Please note, if you are looking for a supply of snacks for Students (like graham crackers, goldfish, yogurts etc.) these items will need to be billed and accounted for to remain compliant. Please use the Catering Request Form in Informed K12 if you need any food items to be supplied by the Child Nutrition Department.

Many thanks for your support and cooperation,

    Eric Burke
