Special Education
Students with disabilities, ages three through 22, may be eligible to receive special education and related services. Special Education is provided as required under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), a federal law that requires school districts to provide a free, appropriate public education to eligible children with disabilities. A “free, appropriate public education” means special education and related services are to be provided as described in an individualized education program (IEP) and under public supervision to your child at no cost. Parents can refer their child for special education and related services and participate in decision-making meetings regarding the child’s assessment, identification, educational placement and services
These services are based on assessments and determined by an Individualized Education Program (IEP) team, which includes the student‘s parent(s)/guardian. Special education services are designed to meet the unique educational needs of students with disabilities. To the maximum extent appropriate, students with disabilities are to be educated with their nondisabled peers in the general education environment. The general education classroom with all appropriate supplementary aids and services where the student has the greatest opportunity to be integrated with their nondisabled peers is the first educational setting for an IEP team to consider.
